Welcome Howard Shearer, Sr. 1913-2006 Welcome Howard Shearer Sr., one of only three men to captain both the football and basketball teams at the University of Florida, who went on to spend 30-plus years as a coach, teacher and high school administrator in Jacksonville, died Tuesday. He was 92. Mr. Shearer died at a hospice in Williamsburg, Va., where he had lived for the past two years. The funeral will be private. Donald Earl Papenbrock, 81, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, December 22, 2010. A musician and teacher in the Jacksonville area for nearly 40 years, Mr."P", as he was affectionately known, directed orchestras at Paxon and Sandalwood high schools. He was beloved by students and faculty alike and multiple times Teacher of the Year. Don was active in the music community as a cellist in the Jacksonville Symphony and Starlight Symphonette. He was a lifetime member of the Musicians' Association of Jacksonville and performedwith notable artists including Tony Bennett, Victor Borge, Count Basie, Liberace, John Denver and many others. He was director of the Jacksonville Youth Symphony and for over 20 years Orchestra Director of Duval Public School's Summer Musical held at the Civic Auditorium. He earned his Bachelor of Music from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA and Master of Music at Northwestern University. Early organization credits include the Quad-Cities Symphony and Mobile Symphony. He retired in 1991 to enjoy the quiet life along the banks of the St. Johns River. He is survived by his sons, Don and Tim Papenbrock; his sons' mother, Liz Papenbrock; and grandsons, Maddison and Mason Papenbrock. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 in the San Juan del Rio Catholic Church, 1714-3 State Rd 13, Saint Johns, FL 32259. Ruby S. Johnson JOHNSON Ruby S. Johnson, 97 years old went to be with our Lord February 28, 2010. She will be missed. Ruby was a lifelong educator. She taught elementary school and was a principal of Annie Morgan School in Jacksonville, Florida from 1945 - 1971. She then went to Brunswick, Georgia and taught another ten years in elementary education before retiring. |

Rogers Bridges, Sr. BRIDGES Danny Rogers Bridges, Sr. passed away January 16, 2007, at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was born in Valdese, NC, on March 6, 1938, to Fletcher and Mary Alice Bridges. Sports were the love of his life from the time he was a small child. In the fall of 1962, he moved to Jacksonville, where his career included teaching high school science and history, and coaching football and basketball at Paxon Senior High. In 1965, his basketball team won the State Championship and he was named the Coach of the Year. |
